Library Research Services

Do you need to research?

Finding background and supporting evidence can be a daunting task for any research project, especially with the amount of possible sources of information continuing to grow. It is therefore always helpful to know that there is someone out there who can help you phrase a research question, identify information resources and find relevant evidence-based information.

How can the Library help?

The Library service offers support to all NHS staff in accessing the knowledge base to support work, learning and research.

As a quick overview, we offer:

  • A variety of books and journals on a wide range of subjects.
  • Athens accounts - used to gain access to literature databases and full text articles
  • Request services - fill in an online form here if you require a book or journal article that we don’t have.
  • Evidence searches - carried out by experienced searchers to find the information that you require.
  • Evidence searching sessions - training is available to help you identify the most relevent sources of information and how to use them.
  • Current awareness - journal tables of contents sent directly to you to keep up to date.
  • Information management - advice on organising, indexing and abstracting knowledge resources.
  • Critical appraisal - Library staff can provide tips and training sessions.
  • Somewhere to study - a number of computers and study areas are available.

Where is the Library?

The Library at Queen Alexandra Hospital is situated on Level E, alongside the learning and development department (above the north entrance).  The Library is staffed 8:30 ‘til 15:00 and out of hours access can be arranged using your PHT staff ID card.

There is also a Library at the Rodney Road Centre (what was the St Mary’s Education Centre).  This Library is open 8:30 ‘til 16:30, Monday to Friday but there is no out of hours access.

The library is also online here and as this is an Internet page, it can be used from hospital and home, from a computer or tablet, 24/7.

Outreach Services...?

If you are unable to get to the library, then the library can always come to you!

Our Clinical Outreach Librarians are able to visit you in your workplace or at another convenient meeting place, be it in QAH, St James’, St Mary’s or even out in Gosport and the surrounding area.

The support and services offered by the Outreach team include almost everything that you could do in the library itself.  All that will be required is a computer (or even just an NHS network point) and they can help you in your research endeavours.
