Funding and Costing

Externally awarded funding not only supports any direct costs of our research activities but also covers any further direct and indirect costs. This impacts both our clinical and research capacities by allowing us to improve our services and infrastructure, which ultimately enhances our ability to conduct high quality research and provide high quality patient care.

It is also our experience that most studies require some financial investment to ensure the successful delivery of their aims and objectives, and it is for these reasons that we endeavour to support all researchers in their applications for funding awards, and in the costing of all studies.

If you are developing a study or have a research idea then please contact our Research Facilitators as soon as possible for early advice and guidance. If you are committed to seeking funding then other support services become available to you and we will put you in touch with the Research Design Service for expert help in the development of your grant proposal.

Please see our regular news bulletins and the following links for current funding opportunities. Also visit our research pathway pages for more information on how to get your study started.

Costing Research

The accurate costing of research studies is extremely important and so it is crucial that our Research Finance Manager is involved in your study at an early stage. When applying for grants all the relevant costs should be captured and labelled correctly, and classified under the general headings of Research Costs, Service Support Costs and Treatment Costs.

All studies (both hosted and Trust-sponsored) should be costed by our research team using standardised costing templates in association with the latest guidance on costs issued by the Department of Health. Commercial and Medical Device templates are available and there is a non-commercial costing template.

Costings should be carried out at the earliest opportunity, preferably once the protocol is complete, and always well before any funding application in collaboration with the research office team.
