Organising your own fundraising event is the perfect way to help raise money for a ward or department close to your heart. Whether it’s a quiz night, a black tie event or activity, we can help you attract supporters to make your event a real success.

Organising your own activity is simple and straightforward – take a look at our tips and ideas to help get you started!

Do Something Fun!

If you do something you like and that is fun, then you will enjoy organising the event and if you have fun, then others will too!

Set Your Target

Know how much you are aiming to raise, it will also keep you focused and to help reach your goal. Why not ask friends and family to take responsibility for raising a percentage of the money as they will have a different circle of friends, family and colleagues to go to.

Find Your Venue, Set Date & Time

Think about the event you are putting on, indoors, outside, big, small, is it weather dependent?

Ask For Support

‘Many hands make light work’- don’t try to do everything yourself, your event will be more fun and easier to organise and run with your friends and family helping you.

Spread The Word

The sooner you start promoting your event, the sooner you will create interest and sign people up or sell tickets.

Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are great places to promote your activity and to get people talking, but remember to post regular, fun and interesting messages to keep people engaged and wanting more!

Your local newspaper and radio station will also have a community section where you can publicise your event, but if you can grab their attention, then you could get an article in the paper, and/or get the local press and radio station to come to your event.

We can also put your event on our ‘Community Events Calendar’ page, on our social media pages and in our monthly email.

For advice on how to promote your event, please contact Emily on Emily.Campbell@porthosp.nhs.uk or call 02392 286000 Ext: 5941.

Make It Legal And Safe

To make your event as successful as it can be, remember to keep it legal and safe. Please read our 'Keeping it Legal' page for more information.

Bringing In The Cash

As a guide, we recommend that for every £1 you spend, you should aim to raise £3. There are many ways to keep your costs down and to bring in extra cash.

When hiring a venue or service, say it is for charity and then you might get a discount, and sometimes even for free!

If printing promotional material, ask the printer to sponsor it and in return say they can put their company details on the flyers, leaflets, banners etc.

Ask local shops and businesses to donate a raffle or auction prize.

Your company may have a Match Giving Scheme, this is where they match the amount you have raised, so why not ask them!

Get donations Gift Aided. Any UK tax payer who donates to you can include Gift Aid, which means the taxman adds 25% to their gift. That's another £2.50 for every £10 raised!

So please make sure any UK taxpayers tick the Gift Aid box on your sponsorship form, and include their full name and address - we need this information to claim the Gift Aid.

Set up an online 'Just Giving' page - this makes it easy for people to donate to you and you can reach friends and family from all over the country and the world!

Hold extra activities to raise more money. For example, a raffle, play 'heads or tails' or guess the weight of the cake.
